Elvis Costello photograph by Keith Morris

My Dad saw Elvis Costello in his young teens when they played in Illinois on a tour with Squeeze. Elvis wore a western shirt with a bolo tie and my father was inspired. His parent’s thought it was a waste of time so his Grandmother gave him the money to get his first electric guitar (Costello plays a Jazzmaster but my Dad mistook it for a Mustang since they look similar)
Life goes on, years pass and the guitars sit in our basements and crawlspaces until my parent’s divorce and my father gives me the Mustang. My first guitar. I used to listen to songs on the radio and try to pick them out by ear and then play them to my Dad over the phone. This leads to starting bands at 10 years old and so on and so on…
back to Elvis though,
My first favorite album was Armed Forces because I love how the lyrics were clever and always had at least two meanings. Its never thought of as a concept album but I see it as describing failed relationships through dictatorships and organized crime.
This Year’s Model is great and poppy
and then later I got into appreciating his first album ‘My Aim is True’ and even had a T-shirt screened by a friend of the phrase…except most of my classmates thought I was referring to shooting accuracy or AOL instant messenger

I could go on and on, but I’ll just say thanks, Elvis Costello

I quoted Joe Strummer in my senior picture

he’s probably the only guy I can think of who could pull off wearing his own band’s t-shirts
